Large fish such as swordfish and blue shark (a type of shark) are the most contaminated by mercury, a heavy metal that pollutes the marine environment and toxic pollutant for humans that accumulates in the meat of some species.
This was revealed by Altroconsumo who conducted an analysis on about 100 fish, fresh and preserved, of different species among the most purchased by Italians, in order to verify the presence of this substance and help consumers regulate themselves so as not to exceed the threshold of intake indicated by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
Experts, in remembering to be careful in the choices and that fish is one of the most present and appreciated foods of the Mediterranean diet that brings numerous benefits to our health thanks to its nutritional qualities, instead report that among the smaller fish and also among more common in Italian trolleys, the situation improves: salmon trout, sardines and mackerel are much less polluted. Canned tuna was also found to be safe. It is recommended in consumption to vary the species as much as possible and to preferably buy smaller or non-carnivorous fish.
