Will a wave of layoffs soon roll over Germany's intensive care units? A current survey shows how much the corona pandemic is affecting nursing staff, doctors and emergency services.

Will a wave of layoffs soon roll over Germany's intensive care units?

A current survey shows how much the corona pandemic is affecting nursing staff, doctors and emergency services.

The German Society for Internal Intensive Care Medicine and Emergency Medicine e.

V. (DGIIN) carried out an online survey among

employees in intensive care units, emergency rooms and in the rescue service

.

And the results don't bode well.

Consequences of the corona pandemic: Nurses in intensive care units and doctors are overloaded

More than 70 percent of employees in health professions currently feel

overwhelmed

.

Every third employee, especially among intensive care workers, is even thinking of

quitting

their

job within the next twelve months.

The exhaustion in the pandemic can also be clearly felt by doctors: around 45 percent said they suffered from the overload.

And here, too, almost 20 percent are considering giving notice within the next year.

"The stress and strain on staff in intensive care units, in the emergency rooms and in the rescue service is high and has risen continuously since the corona pandemic, the

current third wave increases the workload even more,

" confirm the DGIIN experts Professor Dr.

med.

Uwe Janssens, Carsten Hermes and Professor Dr.

med.

Christian Karagiannidis in a press release.

In particular, poor working conditions drive caregivers to quit

An enormous workload is one thing. But the reason why so many nurses and doctors are considering dismissing seem to be primarily the poor working conditions, which have been made worse by the corona pandemic. "When looking into the future, that is, the period after the third wave, 93 percent of those questioned from the health professions consider

intensive and emergency medicine to be structurally and personally insufficiently resilient

,

" reports DGIIN.

It is therefore important "that politicians take effective measures to break the third wave," said Professor Dr.

med.

Uwe Janssens, Secretary General of the DGIIN.

But that alone will not be enough.

Most employees seem to feel that they have been left in the lurch,

especially

when it comes to politics

.

More than 95 percent of those questioned are of the opinion that politicians are not paying enough attention to the shortage of nursing and medical staff and that there are no solutions.

Instead, thinking too short-term, such as suspending important training and further education measures, in order to compensate for foreseeable staff shortages, complains a spokesman for the nursing section.

What really helps nurses: Better pay and staffing keys

What really helps the nurses?

According to DGIIN, care professions must finally be upgraded and concrete improvements must be made:

fair pay

, sustainable adjustments to working conditions, which are also monitored, and a binding

personnel key

that is based on actual needs.

Applause alone is not enough.

“The nursing profession is a demanding and fulfilling job.

All that needs to be

done is to change

the

framework conditions

so that more people stay in this profession or learn it, ”appeal the DGIIN experts.
