It is said that the more you strive to reach, the more rewarding the arrival.

They say - and refer to the island of Skyros in the Aegean Sea, which is considered to be the largest of the Spanish islands.

But you will let the word "effort" scare you, because everything is relative.

True, this beautiful island does not receive direct flights from Israel, and must be reached by a trip from Athens and then take a short cruise from the city of Kymi.

But this way is definitely worth it all.

Three and a half hours of travel - and you're somewhere else.

And also at another time.

Since arriving requires a bit of a challenge, you will get in return an island that is everything but "touristy".

Just you, the wild nature, the tranquil beaches and also a few other casual tourists.

Want to increase?

This can be done easily - just choose to go for a walk around the island, and you will discover a new world of unfamiliar nature, including bird watching and climbing peaks from which there are panoramic views.

Capture romantic sunsets

Skyros covers 209 square kilometers and has a population of only about 3,000. Many of them have been engaged for many generations in crafts such as painting on pottery and artistic engraving on wooden boards. The serenity of everything does not hint at the tumultuous past of the small island, where many conquerors throughout history have left their mark - culture, architecture and culinary.

entrance to the island port of binary (Linaria), which looks like a painting resurrected. home port of the island, just make you feel, well, home.

driving distance of ten kilometers " From the port, you will be taken to the city capital, Chóra, built around an ancient Byzantine fortress. It's time to go for a non-binding stroll, without a map or a definite direction, in the alleys of the village and to be impressed by the local architecture, especially the houses typical of the island - boasting flat roofs and special decorations, which appear here and there in complete surprise.

As already hinted at, by no means miss a visit to the Byzantine castle in the ancient center, where you will be greeted by a statue of a lion made of marble gleaming in our whiteness.

In this complex are the remains of a church from the ninth century as well as a monastery, which was established about a hundred years later.

And if you are already deep in the historical interest, it is also recommended to visit the Manos and Anastasia Faltaits Museum dedicated to local folk art, housed in an ancient tower perched on the city wall.

One way or another, from many corners of the Old City you can find breathtaking vantage points towards sunset.

It is advisable to schedule your arrival accordingly and prepare the cameras.

Skyros beaches: The trees that kiss the sea

Well, with all due respect to history and archeology (and there is respect), this is still a Greek island, for all that that implies.

That is, beaches.

Here awaits you some of the most beautiful beaches in this region of the Greek islands.

The winning formula includes crystal-clear waters, golden sandy beaches and spectacular views where forests of pine trees almost kiss the sea.

You will not find a more romantic scene than this.

Among the beautiful beaches in Skyros you will find Magazia Lino and Agios Petros, but in the eyes of many, Molos Beach holds the crown.

It is located in the village that bears its name and has a bustling cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Cute cafes and bars await you on the beach, and colorful fishing boats sway in the water.

It is also worth knowing that along with the peaceful beaches, there are also beaches on the island that offer water sports activities, so that everyone here will feel that they have exhausted the experience - avid quiet lovers, and also the most active types in the group.

Stick, backpack, map: Discover the nature of Scyros

As already hinted at earlier, nature plays a significant role in the Skyros experience. To make this experience total, it is recommended to go hiking in various points on the island, which is characterized by rocky landscapes, where picturesque villages are planted.

At every tourist center on the island you will be updated on routes, attractions and tourism companies. For example, it is highly recommended to climb to the mountain Kochylas, which rises to a height of 792 meters, and its summit provides panoramic views from which you can not miss a week.

But there is one thing you must not give up in any way: in the area of the main port of Skyros, there are pulsating marine burrows hidden in the rock, and in some there are even stalactites.

Among the popular caves: Pentekali, Gerania and more.

So if you thought our Rosh Hanikra was picturesque - be prepared to be surprised, by and large.

To get to all this goodness, one has to go sailing in small boats, which penetrate, into the caves and their surroundings.

With these boats, you can also visit tiny islands that are covered, including the tiny volcanic island of Podies.

Seaside caves, irresistible beaches and mesmerizing sunsets - it seems that your little trip to Skyros will be etched in your memory for many years to come.
