While President Alberto Fernández and more than a dozen governors began a meeting to define new measures to contain the pandemic, the Government confirmed this Wednesday

23,718 new cases

of coronavirus in Argentina.

For the second day in a row, the number of patients with covid-19 again set a new record and reached

5,178

.

The occupancy of ICU beds in the AMBA is at

76.8%

and at the national level it remains at 68.3%.

The load of tests to the national system was higher than in previous days.

There were a total of 92,172 swabs, with a positivity rate of

25.7%

.

The figure is lower than that of the previous days, but it is well above the 10% recommended by the WHO.

The information comes from the daily report that the Ministry of Health published this afternoon, based on data provided by the provinces in the last 24 hours.

Last week, the country had reached an average of

23,824 daily cases

.

It was the highest weekly average of the entire pandemic and marked a

significant jump

from the first wave: in all of 2020, 18,500 positives were not reached in one day.

However, this Monday and Tuesday there were almost

11% fewer cases

when compared to the same days of the previous week.

Until this Wednesday, 7.5 million coronavirus vaccines were applied in Argentina.

Between Thursday and Friday, two consecutive records of deaths had been registered:

537 and 557

, respectively.

Thus, the 515 reported in October 2020, the peak during the first outbreak of the pandemic, were exceeded.

This brand was also surpassed by the 516 cases reported yesterday.

With 2,928,890 infected and 62,947 deaths, Argentina remains among the

15 countries most affected

since the beginning of the global health crisis, based on accumulated figures.

Given the advance of the second wave, public transport and areas with high traffic of people worry the health authorities.

Therefore, the new measures target these sources of contagion.

greater control

of the income to the terminal stations and in the different transshipment centers" distributed throughout the City of Buenos Aires.

According to official sources, the officials also analyzed "the possibility of

restricting access to the City at certain times,

" although this will be subject to the new measures that the national government could implement as of Saturday, when the current DNU expires.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Health met with representatives of

AstraZeneca

According to Carla Vizzotti at the end of the meeting, they were asked for information on when the doses that Argentina acquired will begin to arrive.

"It is vital for the organization of the vaccination campaign," said Vizzotti.

The original plan, according to a tentative schedule set out in the purchase contract, contemplated the arrival of

6,422,000 doses

between March and April, out of a total of

22,431,000

.

None arrived yet.

Tonight a Lufthansa flight with

244,800 Sinopharm vaccines will arrive in the country

from Beijing and tomorrow another Aerolineas Argentina plane with

a million doses

is scheduled to land in Ezeiza

.

Thus, the contract signed with China for the supply of this vaccine will be finalized.

Minister Carla Vizzotti asked representatives of AstraZeneca for details on when they will start shipping vaccines to the country.

With these two shipments, the country will have reached

10,927,945 doses received

since December last year, when the first shipment from Sputnik was received.
