The corona vaccination significantly reduces the hospital risk for an age group, according to the result of a study.
But only one group of vaccines has been studied.
Fully vaccinated adults aged 65 and over have a 94 percent lower risk of being hospitalized with Covid-19 compared to unvaccinated people of the same age, according to a press release from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an agency of the United States Department of Health. In partially vaccinated people aged 65 and over, the probability of being treated in a clinic with a severe course of the corona disease was 64 percent lower than in non-vaccinated people.
The conclusion of the CDC researchers: mRNA vaccines * enormously reduce Covid-19-related hospital stays in older adults.
The scientists had examined the effectiveness of the mRNA vaccines from Pfizer-Biontech and Moderna. The subjects included in the study were classified as "partially vaccinated" two weeks after their first dose of the mRNA vaccine and "fully vaccinated" two weeks after their second dose, the CDC press release said. The analysis was based on hospital admissions in two US hospital networks covering 24 hospitals in 14 states. According to the German press agency dpa, 417 people were included, including 187 Covid-19 patients and 230 control patients who tested negative for Corona. Almost half of the people were older than 75 years.
As expected, the first vaccination did not provide any protection within the first two weeks
, informs the dpa.
The researchers' explanation is that it takes two weeks for the body to develop an immune response after vaccination.
"The Covid-19 vaccines are highly effective"
"These results are encouraging and welcome news to the two-thirds of people 65 years of age and older who are fully vaccinated," said CDC director Rochelle P. Walensky, according to a CDC press release.
"
The Covid-19 vaccines are highly effective
and these
real-world
results confirm the benefits seen in clinical trials in that the vaccines being tested prevent hospitalization for those most at risk."
Walensky sees this as an enormous relief for the US health system: "
If we continue to expand our vaccination efforts, Covid-19 patients will not overwhelm the health systems
- hospital staff, beds and services will remain available for people who need them because of other illnesses" , she is quoted in the CDC press release. According to the dpa, more than 80 percent of people aged 65 and over in the USA have already received at least one corona vaccine dose. Most of the vaccinations were carried out with the active ingredients of the US manufacturer Pfizer and its German partner Biontech as well as that of the US manufacturer Moderna.
