The initiative "Stand up for art" has filed a constitutional complaint with the Federal Constitutional Court because of the closure of cultural institutions in the Corona crisis. "Since artistic freedom is one of the fundamental rights of communication that is most firmly secured in the Basic Law and the massive restrictions have been in place for a disproportionately long time and cannot really be scientifically justified, a constitutional clarification at the highest level is therefore overdue and appropriate," the initiators shared on Thursday in Munich with.

In mid-April, the Bavarian Administrative Court had already rejected an urgent application by several musicians from the initiative against the pandemic-related closure of theaters, opera and concert halls. The closings are "necessary and appropriate" to protect the health of many people. In the opinion of »Stand up for art«, however, culture is unfairly disadvantaged compared to retail or the churches, for example.

That is why star violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, singer Okka von der Damerau and their colleagues Wolfgang Ablinger-Sperrhacke, Kevin Conners and Christian Gerhaher have filed a constitutional complaint in an urgent procedure with the Federal Constitutional Court.

The conductors Hansjörg Albrecht and Thomas Hengelbrock also supported the move on behalf of the initiative.

In addition, on March 18, a popular complaint against the closure order in the Bavarian Infection Protection Ordinance was filed in their name at the Bavarian Constitutional Court.
