The Münchner Volkstheater and the University of Television and Film (HFF) jointly developed the "Spielzeit" web series.

An urgent recommendation.

  • “Spielzeit” is the name of the joint web series by Münchner Volkstheater and HFF.

  • The production consists of eight parts staged by students at the HFF.

  • “Spielzeit” tells a pointed story of everyday life at the theater.

It was almost exactly a year ago, so it was in the middle of the first lockdown, when Christian Stückl declared that, unlike other theaters, his Munich Volkstheater would not offer an online program.

“I think it's exciting what many colleagues do on the Internet,” said the director at the time.

"But that's not my stage."

But now Stückl's Volkstheater has found a wonderful format that works perfectly virtually - and is much more than a filmed drama, a zoom or live stream performance: together with students from the University of Television and Film (HFF), the city's stage has the eight-part stage "Spielzeit" web series realized.

The production is very loosely and freely based on Arthur Schnitzler's "Reigen".

Each of the ten-minute long films gives pointed insights into everyday theater and rehearsal madness.

Sometimes weird, sometimes crazy, sometimes flat, sometimes surprising - and always: entertaining.

At the center of the story is the terror regime ("If you can't play that, that's your problem.") Of the overwhelmed director Hannah (Nina Steils).

She is to prepare the first production for the time after Corona with the ensemble and threatens to break under this pressure.

“Now we are about to have a premiere.

Now you have to decide what you want. "That alone is Hannah's problem - although everyone is clear:" In the theater you have to deliver. "

HFF students wrote and staged “Spielzeit”

Fanny Rösch, Sebastian Husak, Alexander Löwen and Leo van Kann from the HFF wrote and staged the individual episodes.

In the dialogues they celebrate playing with various theater clichés (drugs, alcohol, sex, not to forget: the debate about the “meta-shit”) with joy.

This is very often a lot of fun when watching, besides there are always sparkling scenes that are true and therefore sometimes bitter.

For example, when the technician scolds in disbelief: "I'm trying to get my people through short-time work - and you go on vacation!"

"Spielzeit" tells of the rehearsal madness in Corona times

In the implementation you can feel the role models of the film people as well as their desire to try out their own handwriting.

This raises "Spielzeit" above the level of filmed and online performances.

It goes without saying that the actors of the Volkstheater are committed to their roles: they can finally, finally they can play again!

“Spielzeit” deserves a sequel

Incidentally, we viewers are portrayed in the first film: Sarah comes to the theater during the lockdown, wants to get autographs and is mistakenly mistaken for the director.

On the rehearsal, she does not clear up the mix-up, but enjoys the luxury of a performance just for herself.

Wouldn't we all like to be Sarah?
