Shots rang out in front of the CIA headquarters near the US capital Washington.
According to official reports, security officials opened fire on an armed attacker there.
The so far unidentified man is said to have tried to drive a car through the outermost gate of the intelligence center, as the US Federal Police announced to the FBI.
He was said to have been wounded by security guards' gunshots when he got out of his car.
Negotiations with the man
The attacker was taken to a hospital.
After attempting to break into the premises, the security forces are said to have negotiated with him for several hours before firing.
NBC reported that the man refused to drive his car away.
Finally, an attempt was made to ram the car out of the way.
A short time later he got out of the car.
A CIA spokesman said the CIA headquarters or the employees were not affected, with the exception of the security forces.
The FBI announced that it would investigate Monday night's incident.
It should be carried out thoroughly and objectively and as quickly as possible.
The security precautions at the CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, United States, had been tightened in recent years.
