A calving highland cattle got into a river in the North Rhine-Westphalian town of Goch and triggered a fire brigade operation - but the emergency services were unable to save the mother or the offspring.
Walkers had discovered the cow in the Niers, as the fire brigade announced.
Accordingly, the cattle, which apparently belonged to a herd on the opposite side of the Dutch land, could no longer reach the bank independently.
The firefighters drove over to the highland cattle in a rubber dinghy.
The young animal, most of which was still in the womb during the entire rescue operation, died.
The emergency services led the weaker and weaker cow against the current to a shallower part of the bank and pulled her ashore with united forces.
The mother cow, which initially seemed to be recovering from the exertion, later had to be euthanized by a veterinarian.
Around 30 firefighters were involved in the rescue operation.
