(ANSA) - MILAN, 05 MAY - The iconic red mailboxes, which have been present throughout Italy since 1961, become smart and from today will be able to provide information to citizens on their Municipality or on the main environmental data, such as temperature, humidity, fine dust. Milan is the first city in Italy to host the new smart mailboxes of Poste Italiane: at the moment they have been installed in via Cordusio, piazza Duomo and viaOrefici, right in the center. Equipped with an 'e-ink' screen, similar to the one found on e-readers, in addition to conveying useful information for citizens, they are also equipped with sensors that detect the presence of correspondence inside and allow Poste to optimize the phase shrinkage, reducing the environmental impact.
"In 2021, at the age of sixty, the mailbox will be renewed and is no longer just a passive tool where the customer enters correspondence but becomes a 'talking' tool always connected to the internet", explained Gabriele Marocchi, Head of Engineering at Poste Italiane during the course presentation. In this first phase, 46 smart boxes will be installed in Milan and new installations will also be in Turin, Rome, Naples for a total of 100 new boxes.
"In 2022 the numbers will be increased to reach 12 thousand boxes in Italy - added Marocchi -.
Throughout the national territory there are about 40 milacassettes that over time will have a reinterpretation towards what is the smart cassette, with a blow that will see us engaged until 2022 with the replacement of a good number of the cassette ". (ANSA).
