Bonaparte was born in Lodi.

It is in Italy that a myth is forged.

The notoriety that Bonaparte had acquired at the siege of Toulon was limited to the staff of the republican army and to the representatives on mission.

Certainly, in Paris, on the news of the capture of Toulon, of which the young officer had been the main architect, the entourage of Robespierre had thought of entrusting Bonaparte with the command of the national guard (the day of 9 Thermidor would have taken a other course), but no decision followed.

And how the main concern of Bonaparte, who had become suspected of Robespierrism after the fall of the Incorruptible, would not have been to make people forget his Toulon success?
