The Jacarezinho poor district in Rio de Janeiro: suspected drug traffickers try to hide, flee from the police.

It has arrived with a large contingent, heavily armed, with armored vehicles and helicopters.

There are firefights.

It was the deadliest police operation in the state of Rio in 16 years.

At least 25 people were shot dead in Thursday's raid, including a police officer.

The rest were suspected members of a drug gang.

Uninvolved people also came into the line of fire and were injured.

The police targeted the group for not only dealing in drugs, but also robbing trucks and robbing train passengers.

She also recruits minors for criminal offenses.

The authorities presented seized weapons, including artillery ammunition, at a press conference.

The favelas of Rios have suffered from violence by drug gangs for decades.

But the violent police raids are also considered questionable.

Human rights activists criticize the operations in the favelas as disproportionate and racist.

Amnesty International described the operation as a "massacre".

"It is completely unacceptable that security forces repeatedly commit serious human rights violations, as is the case today in Jacarezinho against the inhabitants of the favelas, who are predominantly black and live in poverty."

The police defend the latest operation.

Without a police presence, drug trafficking would gain more power and penetrate society, said the police chief.

Rodrigo Oliveira, Chief of Police:

»All the requirements of the Federal Court of Justice were met without exception.

All protocols were followed.

Unfortunately, there were many clashes and we shouldn't celebrate the result because a lot of people have died.

We are heartbroken after the death of our policeman. "

The Brazilian Constitutional Court recently ruled that police operations during the corona pandemic were only permitted under "exceptional circumstances".
