Because of the corona pandemic, children and young people have to do without a lot.

A Corona “catch-up program” is intended to alleviate the consequences.

Extra money for the offspring of poorer families

, additional leisure activities and significantly more student tuition: The Federal Cabinet this week decided on a two billion euro

Corona “catch-up program” for children and young people

.

The money should flow this and next year and cushion the consequences of the corona measures as best as possible, as the German Press Agency (dpa) further reported.

Corona “catch-up program” - money and help for families

The program consists of two pillars: Around one billion euros are to be invested in

tutoring and support programs for schoolchildren

. For this purpose there will be summer camps and additional tutoring courses with the help of associations, commercial providers or even retired teachers and junior teachers in their studies. Another billion is

earmarked

for

topping up various social projects that support children *, young people and families in

order to cushion the consequences of the crisis in this area as well. It is about more money for language tuition in daycare centers in so-called socially disadvantaged areas because many children were unable to attend the facilities, more social work in schools and an increase in leisure activities and inexpensive vacation trips.

What, according to the dpa, is still in the "catch-up program":

“Leisure bonus” - special payment of 100 euros for children from families in need

Part of the “catch-up package” is a

special payment of 100 euros for children from needy families

who have

very little income and

are

dependent on housing benefit or Hartz IV, for example

.

270 million euros are to be made available for this.

Around 2.7 million children could therefore benefit.

The money can be used for vacation, sport and leisure activities or for other things:

"Whether it's buying new trainers or equipment to take part in a vacation program during the vacation, that's up to the families," said Family Minister Franziska Giffey (SPD).

Every fourth student has some catching up to do - tutoring in the next school year

It is assumed that

around a quarter of the around eleven million schoolchildren

in Germany

have to

catch up with learning

backlogs

because they would hardly be reached with so-called distance learning. Federal Education Minister Anja Karliczek (CDU) advocates that the federal states carry out so-called learning status surveys at their schools in order to determine who is in

need of tutoring

. In the next school year there should be "two or four hours of tutoring a week". That is feasible without overwhelming the children, she said on Wednesday in Berlin. According to Karliczek, this should be done in coordination with the school, but not by the teachers themselves, so that they are not additionally burdened.

The federal government provides money - the federal states can increase social programs

Above all, Berlin provides money.

How it is used is decided on a large scale:

The federal states can use it

to increase existing tutoring and social programs

.

Part of the money also goes directly to nationwide foundations and federal programs that provide children, adolescents and families with

advice, leisure and cheap holiday offers

as well as

help with early childhood education

support.

These are, for example, the federal program “Language Daycare Centers”, the “Federal Foundation for Early Help” and the “German Children and Youth Foundation”.

Associations, foundations, paediatricians, youth hostels and youth leisure providers will, according to Family Minister Franziska Giffey (SPD), provide information about additional offers.

"We will use all channels."

All-day care at primary schools from 2026

After a long dispute with the federal states about the high costs, the planned nationwide legal right to

all-day care in primary school was

initiated.

Every child who starts school from 2026/2027 should be entitled to a place by the end of the fourth grade

. In some federal states, especially in eastern Germany, there is already comprehensive support. In other countries, a lot has to be invested in rooms, and enough educators are needed. According to the government, there are around 800,000 full-time places to be created.

According to both ministers, the federal government is now once again accommodating the states both with the schedule - the legal entitlement comes a year later than planned - and with the financing of the project.

As a result, he wants to contribute more than 900 million euros per year to the running costs for the all-day places in the long term - tripling the amount originally planned.

The federal states must approve the project in the Federal Council.

Giffey and Karliczek were optimistic that this will happen.
