Covid-19: the European Union signs a new contract with Pfizer for 1.8 billion doses

2021-05-10T07:36:14.329Z

This huge agreement was formalized this Saturday by the President of the Commission on the sidelines of the summit of 27 heads of state and government,

One more.

The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen announced this Saturday on Twitter the signing of a new contract to buy up to 1.8 billion doses of anti-Covid vaccines from the Pfizer / BioNTech alliance.

It includes a firm order for 900 million doses and an option for another 900 million.

In total, this represents three times the deliveries that were expected in 2021 alone.

Happy to announce that @EU_Commission has just approved a contract for guaranteed 900 million doses (+900 million options) with @BioNTech_Group @Pfizer for 2021-2023.

Other contracts and other vaccine technologies will follow.

These new deliveries, scheduled for this year and until 2023, will make it possible in particular to adapt to new variants of the coronavirus, but also to vaccinate children and adolescents.

An already predominant vaccine

This announcement had been expected for several weeks and negotiations were underway.

It strengthens the weight of the Pfizer / BioNTech alliance product, which represents the vast majority of doses expected by France by the end of June, and those already administered.

The American laboratory provided more than 75% of the 24 million doses injected in France on May 6, in a vaccination center or in a health establishment.

The French government has already hinted, on several occasions, that in the medium term we could do without adenovirus vaccines, including AstraZeneca. This, limited to over 55s because of the (very rare) risk of post-vaccination thrombosis, is shunned by a part of the population yet eligible but who prefers… Pfizer.
