The Real supermarket informed its employees on Wednesday about the end of ten locations.
Further closings will follow.
Düsseldorf - The Real supermarket will close another ten branches by spring 2022.
The company announced this to its employees on Wednesday, according to a report in the
Lebensmittel Zeitung
.
In mid-2020, the financial investor SCP took over around 270 Real stores from the Metro Group and has already closed 28 branches.
Numerous other stores in the supermarket chain went to competing brands such as Kaufland, Globus or Edeka.
Kaufland alone took over 92 locations and the entire Real online shop.
With this step, the Schwarz Group, to which Kaufland belongs, is further expanding its position as one of the most important trading companies in Europe.
The four most important retail chains in Germany divide the market among themselves: Over 80 percent of sales in the grocery store are accounted for by the Schwarz Group, Aldi, Rewe and Edeka.
That is why the Federal Cartel Office got involved in the Real takeover.
The cartel watchdogs only allowed Kaufland to take over 92 Real locations; the company had originally planned 101 takeovers.
These locations are affected - further closures are planned
"In the coming months we will integrate the stores and maintain them as regional local suppliers for customers," said Ralf Imhof, Kaufland boss Germany at the beginning of the year about planned closings.
This gave up to 12,000 employees a new professional perspective.
In total, over 34,000 employees are affected by the end of the Real brand.
These locations will be closed by spring 2022 at the latest:
Bayreuth
Bremen-Vahr
Espelkamp
Food (porscheplatz)
Hamelin
Monschau
Oldenburg-Kreyenbrück
trier
Wetzlar
Wiesbaden (Mainzer Strasse)
Real's branch network should be completely dismantled by next summer. All remaining branches will either be handed over to a new operator or close completely. The reasons for leaving a branch are different. In Wiesbaden, for example, the investor decided to close the branch because a real estate project is planned at this location, as the
Lebensmittel Zeitung
reports.
