They are several thousand, police and civilians, to have pressed into the small courtyard of the Avignon police station on Sunday afternoon, in tribute to Eric Masson.
The 36-year-old brigadier, father of two young children, was killed Wednesday during an intervention on a point of deal.
The alleged shooter is still at large.
The participants, gathered following a call from the police unions on social networks, started several Marseillaises and applause resounded several times in front of the police building, followed by a minute of silence.
Wreaths of flowers were placed around a portrait of Eric Masson.
Condolence registers were available to the crowd.
The death of the sergeant comes shortly after that of Stéphanie Montfeture, administrative agent at the Rambouillet police station, by a radicalized Tunisian.
Prime Minister Jean Castex will receive the unions on Monday evening.
The latter, for their part, call for the organization of a “citizens' march” on May 19 in Paris.
