You can see the difference in the nail before and after recovery.

In the first months of the corona plague every few weeks more symptoms joined the list of symptoms associated with the virus and were reported by covid-19 patients and doctors who treated them.

Along with difficulty breathing, loss of sense of smell and taste, fever and muscle aches, we learned over time that corona can also cause diarrhea and vomiting, headaches and sore throats, great and persistent fatigue and even rashes.

But we also learned that the risk of infection exists even without these symptoms, and that sometimes verified patients are asymptomatic and do not feel anything.

Now the possibility arises that your nails could find out if you were sick in Corona.

Prof Tim Spector, lead researcher at research app Zoe COVID shared on his Twitter account a photo illustrating the phenomenon of 'corona nails' which he says, "is becoming more and more familiar in recent times, and can be seen the difference in nail before and after recovery, when its parts are separated by a clear line ".

The phenomenon to which Prof. Spector refers is not unique to Corona, and has a name: "Lines in it."

This is the appearance of lines or grooves across the nail surface, following a disturbance in the normal rate of nail growth caused as a result of the body dealing with an illness or injury.

Spector noted that these lines may appear in corona healers even without other skin symptoms, and that they are harmless.

The phenomenon has also been documented in medical case descriptions of covid-19 patients that have been published in scientific journals in several places around the world.

One case described a 45-year-old man whose transverse lines appeared on both his fingernails and toes about three-and-a-half months after receiving a positive corona test result.

His disease symptoms lasted for only 10 days and he did not need medical treatment.

Further proof that even mild patients can show this late symptom in their nails.

Also appear in the toes

"Lines in it can appear on one or more of the nails, or on all of them and even on the toes, and we see this in Corona patients," said Dr. Tania Blaker, president of the Dermatologists' Association in the UK, in an interview with HuffPost. Three after the disease, and in the toenails they usually appear a little later. She emphasized that they are not dangerous or harmful and that they disappear on their own as the nail grows.

However, lines in it are not an exclusive symptom of corona and therefore their presence does not constitute conclusive evidence of infection with the virus.

Other conditions that can cause them to appear include nail damage, eczema, poor diet, Renault syndrome, hypertension, epilepsy, kidney failure, Kawasaki disease and also side effects of chemotherapy.

They are also associated with high fever - which is one of the symptoms that characterize coronary heart disease, but not really it, so they may also appear after other diseases such as pneumonia, malaria, etc.

As stated the appearance of these lines in itself does not require special treatment, they tend to stop forming after recovery from the disease or medical condition that caused them.

And then, it takes about half a year until the nail grows and they disappear.

But if this does not happen - if the lines do not stop appearing or the nail does not grow, you should seek medical advice, because there may be another or additional medical condition involved.

Another nail change reported in several places and associated with corona is the appearance of red crescents at the base of the nail.

The researchers are still not entirely sure what causes them, but speculate that it is related to the fact that Covid-19 causes inflammation in the blood vessels.
