(ANSA) - CAIRO, MAY 10 - "We are worried that more and more people undertake this dangerous journey and the loss of human lives is intolerable. So far at least 500 people have drowned in the central Mediterranean this year compared to about 150 deaths recorded in the same period" in 2020 : Safa Msehli, a spokesperson for IOM, the World Organization for Migration based in Geneva, told ANSA.
"States cannot ignore their responsibilities and obligations under international law. We need more state-led means for search and rescue in the Mediterranean," the spokesperson added. (HANDLE).
