To prevent this, consider storing carrots to sweet potatoes as follows.

Everyone knows it: the weekly shopping is done, you can sit back and relax. But after just a few days, when you look in the refrigerator, you notice that

some types of vegetables have already passed their zenith and are no longer edible.

The next visit to the supermarket is inevitable. But if you follow a few tricks when storing vegetables, you can extend the shelf life enormously. With carrots, for example, it helps to wrap them in a damp tea towel and store them in the fridge-vegetable compartment. In this way, the healthy vegetables stay fresh longer.

Is there not enough space * in your refrigerator for all of your vegetables?

No problem, many types of vegetables are better off outside of the refrigerator anyway.

The following trick causes root vegetables such as potatoes or parsnips to last longer.

Store carrots and potatoes in a sandpit - extend shelf life

To extend the life of root vegetables such as carrots, beetroot, kohlrabi or potatoes, you should store them in a box full of sand rather than in the refrigerator.

This preserves the vegetables and keeps them fresh longer.

It's that easy:

  • Choose a big enough box and fill it a few centimeters high with sand.

You can buy sand at a hardware store, for example.

  • Then place the freshly purchased root vegetables on the sand and cover everything with another thick layer of sand until nothing of the vegetables can be seen.

  • To avoid long digging, you can use several boxes and assign the root vegetables to one box each.

If you label the boxes, the vegetables you need for cooking are quickly at hand.

  • It is best to store the sand boxes in a dark, cool place.

The basement or the floor of the pantry are suitable for this.
