For the fifth time, a painting by Pablo Picasso has sold for more than $ 100 million. The auction at Christie's shows how robust the art market is, even in the pandemic.

A painting by the Spanish painter Pablo Picasso was auctioned in New York for 103.4 million dollars (85.4 million euros). The price for the work "Sitzende Frau am Fenster (Marie-Thérèse)", completed in 1932, was driven up to 90 million dollars on Thursday (local time) at Christie's in a 19-minute bidding contest. With fees and commission, the new owner has to pay $ 103.4 million.

The previous owner had only acquired the painting eight years ago.

At that time he had paid 28.6 million pounds (33.3 million euros) for it in London, less than half of the price now achieved.

In the meantime, five Picasso works have cracked the symbolically significant mark of 100 million dollars.

The highest price for a Picasso work was achieved in 2015: $ 179.4 million for the painting "The Women of Algiers".

The enormous price for Picasso's »Seated Woman at the Window« shows that the art market continues to flourish despite the corona pandemic.

Most recently, a work of art cracked the 100 million dollar mark in 2019.

At that time, a picture from the "Grainstack" series by the French impressionist Claude Monet was auctioned at Sotheby's in New York for $ 110.7 million.
