Barometer of fraternity: the French show less solidarity

2021-05-16T13:18:14.491Z

This year, the Fraternity Barometer, the results of which we are revealing, shows an increase in mistrust of people outside.

Finished the momentum of solidarity?

While the third Fraternity Barometer published last year marked an unprecedented desire to get involved for others, the results of the 2021 edition seem more mixed.

The survey, the results of which we are revealing, indicate in particular that mistrust of others - that is to say outside of one's close family, friendly or professional circle - has further increased to reach 72% of the responses.

It was 65% in April 2020, and 62% in April 2019.

In addition, "the study reflects a rather stiff general discourse vis-à-vis the migratory phenomenon, while this is the first year that we have tested this subject", admits Eric Thuilier, spokesperson for the Labo de la fraternité, the collective which brings together associations of social cohesion.

"But, as for the rest, we can point to ambiguities", he notes.

Indeed, while 71% of those polled consider that there are enough immigrants in France and that welcoming more is undesirable, they are also 73% to recognize that immigrant workers occupy jobs in which the French do not. do not want.

France described as "a country of diversity" by 91%

“In general, the impression emerges that the French are ready individually, at their level, to act for others, but that at the country level, they are rather unfavorable to open public policies. immigration, but also which would favor minorities to the detriment of the majority, ”sketches François Legrand, from the Business Opinion and Strategy department of Ifop, the institute which conducted the survey.

A paradoxical point of view that we find emblematically around the notion of diversity.

In an almost unanimous movement, 91% of respondents describe France as "a country of diversity" - an increase compared to previous years.

But what judgment do they make on this observation?

85% describe it as "a good thing", again on the rise over time.

This does not prevent 74% of respondents from affirming that diversity creates "problems, conflicts", 55% from deeming it worrying, when 68% nevertheless present it as "a force for the country".

Faced with this contrasting picture, one thing is certain: one year from the presidential election, living together arouses, in our country, feelings as complex as they are contradictory.

Fraternity barometer produced by Ifop for the Fraternity Lab between April 27 and 30, 2021 on a sample of 1,553 people representative of French society aged 18 and over via an online questionnaire.
