Argentina is the

fourth country with the highest number of new infections

globally.

Taking the average of the previous 7 days - from May 9 to 15 - the daily number of infected officially reported is 22,111.

According to a survey by the Our World in Data site, this figure is only surpassed by India (which averages 341,142 infections per day and suffers a devastating advance from the health crisis), Brazil (62,950) and the United States (33,859).

If the incidence of positive cases is taken in relation to the population, the situation is similar.

Argentina has a rate of

489 new infections

per million inhabitants.

It is the

fifth

highest in the world.

Intensive care occupation is one of the variables that concerns and is closely followed by health authorities.

With one caveat: none of the four countries that exceed it has more than 4 million inhabitants, so the rate in the middle of an outbreak tends to skyrocket.

These are Seychelles (which has 4,083 new infected per million), Maldives (2,393), Bahrain (939) and Uruguay (792).

More than 3.3 million

The 16,350 infections reported today - out of a total of 67,507 tests - marks a

strong jump

for the average that had been recorded in recent Sundays, since it is the day when fewer cases are usually reported.

The last two weeks the figure had been around 11,000.

In this way, Argentina reached

3,307,285

infected with covid-19 since the beginning of the global health crisis.

The positivity rate - which measures how many of the people swabbed had the virus - stood at

24.2%

this Sunday

, a figure lower than the one that had been occurring in recent days, but which is more than double the 10% recommended by The OMS.

Measures and vaccines

This Friday the DNU that imposed the latest restrictions with the aim of containing the advance of the pandemic expires.

Official sources anticipated that classes would continue to be suspended in the areas under epidemiological alert and it is being evaluated whether the new extension will be for 14 or 21 days.

The Buenos Aires governor, Axel Kicillof, spoke this Sunday about the situation that the country is experiencing due to the second wave.

"It is not necessary to be satisfied with that they reach the respirators, because the problem is that the one that enters the intensive care has a not so high probability of surviving, unfortunately. The issue is to stop the contagions".

The City, meanwhile, plans to open the registration for the coronavirus vaccination of people between 55 and 59 years old with risk factors in the coming days.

The exact date depends on the amount of vaccines that are arriving in the country and that are destined for Capital.

Health Minister Carla Vizzotti announced the arrival of almost 5 million doses of AstraZeneca before the end of the month.

Last week, Health Minister Carla Vizzotti announced that

4.8 million

AstraZeneca

vaccines

should arrive in the country before the end of the month

.

Of that total, 3,960,000 correspond to the direct contract that the country has with that laboratory, and another 861,000 must be delivered through the Covax mechanism.

According to data from the Public Vaccination Monitor, 11,487,272 doses were distributed to the provinces, of which

9,927,783 were applied

.

So far, 1,904,220 people have had the two injections that complete the vaccination schedule.
