A glass of sweet cocoa for the children?
There are many cocoa powder suppliers.
Read here who you can expect the better ingredients from.
For breakfast or for cake on Sunday afternoons when the adults drink coffee *:
Most people associate
cocoa
with their childhood or give their children the sweet, chocolatey drinks.
It shouldn't be news that finished instant cocoa powders are very likely full of sugar.
But how much cocoa bean is there actually in the chocolate milk?
And how many calories?
The
NDR show “Markt”
compared
five
cocoa powder products
from different manufacturers.
A comparison of cocoa powder: that much (or little) cocoa is really in it

With the exception of Alnatura's drinking
cocoa
, all products contain only
heavily
de-oiled
cocoa powder
and can therefore only be called "cocoa-containing powdered drinks".
Manufacturers save costs with heavily de-oiled cocoa powder, from which the valuable cocoa butter has been removed from the bean.
At Alnatura, on the other hand, the consumer gets
chocolate powder
, which according to the cocoa regulation must contain at least 32 percent cocoa.
But what else is in the cocoa powder, if not mostly cocoa?

Cocoa vs. drinking chocolate
By the way: In contrast to cocoa, drinking chocolate consists of at least 25 percent cocoa.
This must also not be heavily de-oiled.
In comparison, drinking chocolate is a bit of a higher quality.
But be careful: the designation “type drinking chocolate” does not meet the legal requirements, for example because it does not contain enough cocoa or other additives.
Instead, the taste often comes from artificial flavors, as
reported by
Ndr.de.
Comparing cocoa: lots of sugar, lots of calories
A look at the list of ingredients confirms the assumption: there is mainly
sugar
in the finished cocoa products, sometimes up to 78 grams per 100 grams of cocoa powder. At Kaba, for example, this corresponds to eight sugar cubes per serving (200 ml) (some of which is already naturally contained in the milk). The sugar content in cocoa powders is very high and the drinks do not contribute to a healthy diet. Fatal, especially as growing children like to drink cocoa. One way to declare war on the immense sugar consumption: When buying cocoa, make sure that there is little sugar. But here, too, caution is advised. Nesquik, for example, offers a product variant with 30 percent less sugar, but the
amount of calories
is different
hardly with either product.
In addition, there is then the risk that a consumer will use more of the powder in order to achieve the desired sweetness and thereby consume more calories.
According to the nutrition expert, the light version does not get any healthier with less sugar.

In the
taste test
,
too
, most cocoa powders performed rather mediocre: the NDR testers criticized most of the drinks with little cocoa taste, but a sweet taste remained. An artificial aroma was also found. The verdict for Alnatura cocoa comes as a surprise, as it had the highest cocoa content and the least sugar of all the powders compared. Nevertheless: The testers found that Alnatura cocoa tastes like nothing, i.e. neither sweet nor cocoa.
The nutrition
expert of
the “Markt” show recommends
mixing
cocoa yourself
- from milk and baking cocoa *.
You can find this in the supermarket next to the baking ingredients.
This chocolate milk will definitely be less sweet and therefore taste unfamiliar at first, but the baking cocoa even contains healthy ingredients such as vitamins and minerals.
For example, you can add a little honey to sweeten it.
