According to the authorities, the number of car thefts fell significantly in 2020.

Around 14,000 vehicles were stolen last year, according to Monday's figures from the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA).

Compared to 2019, this is a decrease of around 14.6 percent.

According to the BKA, the decline can also be explained by the measures taken to contain the corona pandemic.

For example, border closings had an impact on the crime, it said.

The numbers were particularly low at the beginning of the pandemic in Germany in April and May of last year.

The number of stolen or misappropriated trucks and rental cars decreased in a similarly strong manner in 2020.

Compared to 2019 (839), the number of "permanently lost" trucks fell by almost a quarter (24.1 percent) to 637 registered acts.

According to the BKA, the number of rental cars fell by 15.5 percent compared to the previous year (1281) to 1082 in 2020.
