Since December 2020, the detection of emerging viral variants of the
coronavirus
alerted the scientific community.
After the outbreak of infections that was registered in health personnel of the Ricardo Gutiérrez Children's Hospital, of which 24 were immunized with two doses of Sputnik V, it was learned that
the Manaus variant was involved
in genomic sequencing.
The presidential advisor and infectious disease doctor, Eduardo López, was one of the affected workers.
He pointed out that having been inoculated
with the complete scheme
of the Russian vaccine allowed him to go through the disease with "relative tranquility" and evolve in a benign way.
However, vaccination with two doses
is not the norm
in Argentina, but the exception.
This has made the country the fourth country in the world with the most daily cases of coronavirus in recent days, behind India, Brazil and the United States.
More than once, the experts consulted by
Clarín
remarked that although the injections against Covid-19 do not prevent the possibility of contracting it, they reduce the potential occurrence of complications, hospitalizations and mortality.
Until March 26, the National Ministry of Health had observed that the infection rate of those who received any of the three vaccines that are applied in Argentina
was less than 0.5%
.
In the case of the Russian, 0.27% after 14 days after receiving the first dose.
Variant 501Y.V3 (lineage P.1, derived from lineage B.1.1.28), known as Manaus, is associated with
increased transmissibility
, rapid spread, change in the clinical presentation of the disease and a decrease in the efficacy of available diagnostics, vaccines and therapies, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Today it is already of community transmission and would
represent the average 50% among the new variants that circulate in the AMBA
.
It can even recontaginate and infect, usually mildly, inoculated patients who have received any of the three vaccines given in the Argentine Republic.
Can you think that it is generating more infections in those vaccinated?
“There are no certainties.
What happens is that it
is
already
very hegemonic
.
There are re-infections, but at a fairly marginal value.
The efficacy studied in clinical trials has been corroborated, but now in the population ”,
Nicolás Kreplak, Vice Minister of Health of the Province of Buenos Aires
, responded to
Clarín
.
For Arnaldo Casiró, Head of Infectology at Hospital Álvarez, the Manaus variant is circulating
more and more
, which explains that it also infects those vaccinated and that it is becoming predominant.
Even the sanitarista doctor and advisor to the Buenos Aires government, Jorge Rachid, had warned that this strain "attacks, with greater virulence,
a much more numerous age group
because it is the one that goes from 40 to 65 years."
“The Manaus variant (P1) is producing a significant number of cases in CABA and GBA.
It is
more elusive
to the immunity generated by vaccines, including Sputnik V ”, says Martín Stryjewski, head of CEMIC Hospital.
The expert says: “A few weeks ago we saw
a severe Covid picture
in a patient vaccinated with Sputnik V (complete scheme).
We are studying this case, and we have requested the sequencing that is still pending ”.
For his part, the virologist from Conicet, Mario Lozano explains that the Manaus variant
was not so installed 30 days ago
and points out that he is putting together a database on the subject.
He opts for caution and suggests waiting at least 20 days for an answer and thus comparing how many were infected today with the number of vaccinated 21 days ago.
