Udo Lindenberg is to become an honorary citizen of his adopted city of Hamburg.
This was announced by the Senate of the Hanseatic city on Monday for the rock musician's 75th birthday.
"It shaped Hamburg and Hamburg shaped it," Prime Minister Peter Tschentscher (SPD) justified the decision of the Senate.
"Udo Lindenberg is one of the most important musicians of our time."
In recognition of his great artistic achievements and his life's work, which includes, among other things, his commitment to freedom and against discrimination, Lindenberg should therefore be awarded honorary citizenship.
Tschentscher explained: "His personality and his music have shaped entire generations."
The appointment still has to be officially confirmed by the citizens.
According to the Senate, the procedure, including the award ceremony, should only be organized "in agreement with Udo Lindenberg" as soon as the pandemic allows.
Lindenberg was born on May 17th in Gronau, but has lived in Hamburg for decades.
He lives there in the luxury hotel "Atlantic".
