Air purifiers, CO2 sensors ... How traders, cinemas and restaurateurs are preparing to ventilate

2021-05-20T14:27:02.673Z

In addition to gauges and social distancing, the health protocol recommends effective ventilation to limit the risk of contagion.

Respect a clientele gauge, make sure the mask is worn properly, but also open the windows wide or freshen the air!

These are, in summary, the instructions given to traders, restaurateurs, room managers and museum and cinema managers for reopening.

The deconfinement calendar runs from here to June 30 and the new stage, long awaited since it concerns terraces, cultural places and all shops, starts this Wednesday.

"It is advisable to ventilate the premises by natural or mechanical ventilation in working order", we read in the sanitary protocol intended for restaurants as well as that for traders.

In places of culture, in particular museums, "particular attention will be paid to the methods of ventilation and aeration of spaces, whether they are working spaces or open or public spaces".

The risk of aerosol transmission has emerged

The last time cinemas, museums and restaurants were open, in the summer and last fall, this necessity was far from being so emphasized.

But in the meantime, the risk of transmission of the virus by aerosol, that is to say through mini-satellites that can remain in suspension for long hours in closed connection, has emerged within the community. scientist and authorities.

Ventilation and aeration are "an essential measure for the prevention of situations at risk of aerosolization of SARS-CoV-2", is it written in black and white in the health protocol intended for museums, monuments and tourist centers. 'art.

The establishments have prepared for it. Some have equipped themselves with air purifiers, devices that recycle the air and "clean" viruses. "Since the government suggested that it should be installed, we have received many more requests from different establishments saying:

If I open, I must secure the place.

», Rejoices Jean-Luc Jung, the sales director for France of the company Trotec, specialist in the field. In Strasbourg, the Odyssée cinema is one of these new converts. The manager has even just received an order from a nightclub, the only type of establishment that does not yet have a reopening date. But beware: not all devices are created equal. And we are still light years away from what is being done in Germany in terms of deployment. "The ratio is 1 to 1000: for a device sold in France, there are 1000 in Germany," says Jean-Luc Jung.

Large cultural sites sometimes have a system that is already very efficient.

At the Philharmonie de Paris, for example, each seat has its own ventilation system.

By halving the power and accompanying it with other measures such as wearing a mask, "the risks of contamination of the public and the orchestra by aerosols appear greatly reduced", according to a study conducted by Dassault Systèmes in end of last year.

Open windows, "the best there is"

Many other professionals in the starting blocks for the reopening simply plan to ventilate, by opening wide the doors and windows. Nothing better than allowing air potentially laden with viral particles to evaporate into the atmosphere. And the current period, with the approach of summer, obviously lends itself much more to it than the end of last fall. “The important thing is to allow air renewal by any means. For those who have the possibility of having part of their facade open, this is what is best, ”says Laurent Fréchet, at the head of six restaurants, including five in Paris. For the head of the national catering branch within the GMI union, the air purifier may even become a less effective "gadget".

At a minimum, the High Council for Public Health (HCSP) recommends opening windows “at least 5 minutes every hour” in establishments open to the public.

"It will depend on the weather, but leaving the door open will perhaps be the most desirable", adds Thierry Véron, president of the Federation of associations of traders and craftsmen of Paris (FACAP).

“In addition to the weather, there is also pollution and noise.

It is not easy to open wide the doors or windows everywhere, ”tempers a clothing seller, installed on a busy street in the center of the capital.

"They are afraid of having to spend extra money"

There remains the possibility of installing, in addition, CO2 sensors.

These small boxes do not act directly on the quality of the air, but they make it possible to know in real time whether the latter is very loaded with toxic particles.

The health protocol also calls for "to promote, as soon as establishments are equipped with suitable instruments, the measurement of carbon dioxide in the air".

If the light turns red beyond a certain threshold, this is a sign that it is necessary to ventilate in order to limit the risk of transmission of a virus by aerosol.

Installed in several schools and universities, CO2 sensors are struggling for the moment to impose themselves in shops and restaurants. “Unofficial contacts with have not been very successful. They are afraid that it will force them to reduce the gauges or have to spend additional money, ”says a promoter of this type of boxes. Per unit, the price ranges from several tens to several hundred euros.
