Eating a salad at least once a day is a great thing for health and even necessary, but it is recommended to include leafy vegetables like lettuce or spinach.

A new study shows that eating just one cup of uncooked green leafy vegetables strengthens cardiovascular health and gives those who eat it a 26 percent lower risk of heart disease.



For the study, researchers from Kawan University (ECU) in Western Australia examined the nutritional and blood pressure data of more than 53,150 people living in Denmark who took part in the Danish Diet, Cancer and Health Study for 23 years.

During the 23 years of follow-up, 14,088 cases of cardiovascular disease were documented.

The researchers found that people who consumed the vegetables richest in nitrates (nitric acid salt) had a systolic blood pressure of about 2.5 mm Hg and a lower risk of heart disease between 12 and 26 percent.

Dietary nitrates - found in leafy green vegetables, are converted to nitric oxide by bacteria in the mouth and stomach.

High blood pressure is one of the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease that is considered to be the leading cause of death in the world.

"Our results have shown that simply by eating one cup of raw green leafy vegetables (or half a cup of cooked) rich in nitrates each day, people may be able to significantly reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease," said the study's editor in the European Journal of Epidemiology. "People should not take supplements to increase their nitrate levels because research has shown that one cup of leafy green vegetables daily is enough to reap the benefits of heart disease," said Dr. Bondono.
