In the southern Chinese metropolis of Shenzhen, a building more than 300 meters high temporarily swayed and was evacuated.
On recordings distributed by the Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, people could be seen running away from below the SEG Plaza.
On the roof of the 75-story high-rise building, two columns could be seen moving violently.
Eyewitnesses also posted videos on the Weibo platform showing the skyscraper wobbling and hundreds of frightened people running across the street.
Later recordings from CCTV show that the building was no longer visibly moving.
The authorities said there was no earthquake.
The cause of the sway will now be investigated.
The skyscraper in the center of Shenzhen was completed in 2000 and, in addition to numerous offices, houses a large electronics store.
Last year, the Chinese authorities prohibited the construction of buildings more than 500 meters high.
Previously, height restrictions had already come into effect in cities like Beijing.
