Business realities that are growing, even in the South, thanks to the advent of optical fiber for internet connections. These are the first, encouraging, effects of the cabling project, carried out by Open Fiber, a company consisting of a stake between Enel and CDP Equity Spa, of the Cassa Depositi e Prestiti group, which has equipped the city of Reggio Calabria with an important infrastructure now nearing completion. Davide Borrello, is the director of Bustles 2.0 Srl Reggio Calabria, a start-up born in October 2018 that offers web services and cloud software. “We can say that the connection with fiber - he says - offers numerous benefits: lower costs, because the production times of our work have been significantly lowered. Now we are also able to create our own small servers to be made available to our customers,to whom we offer shopping services, in addition to the traditional web services we produce. We have also established collaborations with other nearby realities that were probably born and in any case manage to work thanks to the advent of optical fiber. Ours - adds Borrello - is a very complex job that would be difficult and inexpensive to manage without the right infrastructure. Having a Giga and more available, and 280/300 mega uploads, unthinkable until two or three years ago, has radically changed our way of working and also the times of our work have been considerably reduced ”. Thanks to Open Fiber, the city of Reggio Calabria is now equipped with one of the most advanced networks. The wiring and connection work between the various points is now being completed. The city is served by a power station from which several PFP (Primary Flexibility Point) branch off, which in turn feed a myriad of PFS (Secondary Flexibility Point) scattered around the city. From then on, the last stretch of fiber to the various real estate units, served for each building by a PFE (Building Flexibility Point), from which each individual home or office can be connected. There will be 51 thousand by the end of the year. “Optical fiber provides important advantages - explains Sabrina Guzzi, Field manager for Reggio Calabria - and the lockdown period has fully shown its merits: from the possibility of carrying out the so-called telemedicine, to smart-working and remote teaching. A service that has been highly appreciated by users, but above all by numerous companies that have thus been able to increase their activities in the best possible way, despite the difficulties of moving ". The Municipality of Reggio Calabria has recently joined the southern “South working” network. “An initiative - underlines the deputy mayor. Tonino Perna - who brings together many young people, professionals and managers, mostly from Southern Italy, who, due to the pandemic, have been forced to return to their places of origin and love, while continuing to pursue their professional ambitions. Equipping the territory with these digital infrastructures - continues Perna - is now essential, otherwise every effort we will make for the development of the territory will be useless. Now a great effort is needed to adapt the service of Local Authorities, Public Administrations,to the great opportunities offered by optical fiber ". Calabria, thanks to the work of Open Fiber in progress in many areas of the region, is quickly overcoming the digital divide that penalized it compared to the rest of the country. “The connected real estate units are already over 80 thousand - underlines Gianfranco Guerrera Regional Manager Open Fiber for Calabria - and we are going further; thanks to the award of the tender by the Ministry of Economic Development, in favor of the so-called 'market failure' Municipalities, because they are not economically convenient for telecommunications operators. By 2021 - adds Guerrera - we will connect 238 small municipalities. 27 are already connected to the network, and in two: S. Maria del Cedro,in the province of Cosenza and Bianco (Reggio Calabria) it is already possible for operators to activate the marketing of the service ".
