As with any therapy or vaccination, corona vaccination with mRNA or vector vaccines can lead to undesirable side effects. Some people are allergic to one of the ingredients in the vaccine. Cases of thrombosis after the corona vaccination * have also been reported. The vaccine registration studies documented side effects that were usually harmless and a good sign because physical reactions such as flu-like symptoms show that the vaccine stimulates the body to produce antibodies against coronaviruses.

However, in the course of the approval studies, very rare side effects usually cannot be recognized, according

to the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG).

That is why international authorities monitor suspected side effects after vaccines have been approved.

In Germany, the Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI) as the Federal Institute for Vaccines and Biomedical Medicines regularly publishes "safety reports

" on this.

In these, suspected side effects or vaccination complications related to the time of vaccination are documented.

Corona vaccination: 49,961 reported suspected side effects or vaccination complications

In the current safety report, the PEI informs that since the vaccination campaign began at the end of December 2020, 49,961 suspected side effects or vaccination complications have been reported in Germany after a corona vaccination (the number relates to the period between December 27, 2020 and April 30, 2021).

According to the report, a total of 28,774,580 vaccinations had been carried out in Germany by April 29.

The distribution of the vaccinations among the approved corona vaccines was as follows:

  • Comirnaty from Biontech / Pfizer: 21,329,667 vaccinations

  • Moderna by Moderna: 1,667,261 vaccinations

  • Vaxzevria from Astrazeneca: 5,775,546 vaccinations

  • Ad26.COV2.S from Johnson & Johnson: 2,106 vaccinations

Very rarely serious side effects after corona vaccinations

The PEI safety report assigns 3,073 suspected cases of side effects or vaccination complications to the vaccine from Moderna, 26,206 suspected cases to the Astrazeneca preparation and so far three reports to the vaccine from Johnson & Johnson. "

The reporting rate for all vaccines together was 1.7 per 1,000 vaccine doses

, for reports of serious reactions 0.2 per 1,000 vaccine doses in total," the report said.

The PEI understands serious adverse vaccination reactions as those that require a stay in a hospital or have been classified as "medically significant", it says.

4,916 such suspected cases were documented by the end of April.

"2,386 of these suspected cases occurred after vaccination with Comirnaty, 175 serious suspected cases after vaccination with the COVID-19 vaccine Moderna and 2,132 serious suspected cases occurred after vaccination with Vaxzevria," according to the PEI.

Serious side effects included thrombosis with thrombocytopenia, anaphylactic reactions, or myocarditis.
