(ANSA) - NEW YORK, MAY 23 - The world is struggling with a stagnation of the population: according to the estimates of demographers, in the second half of the century and perhaps even earlier, the global population will enter a period of sustained decline for the first time. The New York Times reports it underlining how a planet with fewer people could ease the pressure on the use of natural resources. But, at the same time, it requires substantial adjustments for society by blowing up the idea that young people are the engine of economic growth and help pay for the elderly.
If the possibility of a population decline is worrying many, others instead invite us not to be scared. Many women have fewer children by choice and a more content population can translate into higher wages, a more equal society, fewer emissions and a higher quality of life. (HANDLE).
