Deodorants are available to prevent unpleasant smells from spreading on hot days.

But which ones are good for what?

Stiftung Warentest has the answer.

Berlin - Summer is just around the corner - even if in many places it doesn't look like it when you look out the window.

But the hot days will come and then you need a deodorant that can withstand.

It should fight the unpleasant smell from the armpits, be well tolerated and easy to use.

But the choice on the market is huge.

To make the purchase decision a little easier, Stiftung Warentest has now tested 19 deodorant sprays.

The testers were particularly surprised by one result.

Stiftung Warentest: Deodorant test under difficult conditions - thanks to Corona

Corona has had an impact on large parts of our everyday life for a little more than a year. The product testers of the Stiftung Warentest are not spared from this either. They actually wanted to test antiperspirants in their deodorant test. These special deodorants should not only protect against bad smells, but also against sweating. But because of the corona pandemic, it had to be avoided. Because for a decent result, all test subjects would have had to go into a sweat room twice for 40 minutes. According to Stiftung Warentest, that would only have been possible with a great deal of effort in compliance with infection protection. Therefore, it was decided to forego it.

But Corona also set the rules when testing simple deodorants.

Usually, so-called sniffers would be used in the tests.

You have the dubious honor of checking whether the deodorant protection lasts for 24 hours.

To do this, they should actually have smelled the test subjects' armpits.

But even that was not possible because of the infection protection measures in place.

So one made use of a trick.

After 20 hours, the testers stuck special cloth pads under the subjects' arms.

After four hours the pads were removed and sniffing started.

It had to be compared whether there was a significant odor difference between the treated and the untreated armpits.

Failure to do this meant the grade was poor.

Isn't aluminum in deodorants as harmful as long suspected?

Stiftung Warentest: The most important criterion is protection against armpit odor

The testers took on a total of 19 deodorants.

These included nine unisex products and ten women’s products.

Five deodorants were designated natural cosmetic products.

The most important criterion in the test was of course protection against armpit odor.

It made up over half of the final grade.

But also the application, the user-friendliness and the advertising messages were examined carefully.

The testers also went looking for silicones.

One product contained cyclopentasiloxane D5 which was a half note deduction.

A total of 20 test persons were sniffed.

The women’s products were tested by the test subjects, while the unisex products were tested in a gender-mixed manner, writes Stiftung Warentest.

Six deodorants for women were able to convince the testers.

The test winner was the deodorant from Edeka.

The "Eklos Body Tropic Deodorant" with an average price of 95 cents scored well.

But deodorants from Garnier, Nivea, Netto and Fa also took the top positions.

When it comes to Uni-Sex-Deodorants, the Sebamed product was by far ahead.

The "Fresh Deodorant Fresh" was just able to convince with 2.5 with good.

However, it also costs an average of 3.30 euros.

With an average price of almost ten euros, the deodorant from La Roche-Posay is behind with a satisfactory rating.

Stiftung Warentest: Natural cosmetic products all fail

Things didn't go well at all for natural cosmetic products.

Especially the deodorants from Lavera, Speick and Weleda failed the test.

They only achieved the grade unsatisfactory.

“They did not succeed in preventing armpit odor efficiently,” writes Stiftung Warentest.

The testers find it surprising.

Because actually, even under the strict requirements for the ingredients in natural cosmetics, there are ways to keep the bacteria - which are responsible for the bad smell - in check.

In the 2019 test, there were two more natural cosmetic deodorants that did well.
