What reinforces the part of mystery which still surrounds the origins of the Covid-19 epidemic, a year and a half after the first cases.

The Wall Street Journal on Sunday revealed a report from the American intelligence services according to which three researchers from the Chinese Institute of Virology in Wuhan fell ill in November 2019 and were hospitalized.

It is in this city that was officially identified the first case of Covid confirmed by Beijing, a man who fell ill, on December 8, 2019. But several elements have already suggested that SARS-CoV-2 could have already circulated before this date in other countries.

Beijing rejects accidental hypothesis

These revelations about China, rich in detail about when these researchers were affected, could add weight to calls for a broader investigation into the origins of the pandemic.

Scientists believe that the trail of a virus that has escaped a laboratory should not be completely ruled out.

What the Chinese authorities have repeatedly denied.

Origin of Covid-19: WHO leaves China without certainty

The 74th World Health Assembly of the WHO, which starts on Monday, could give rise to new debates on this issue.

The team of investigators which had been missioned to China at the beginning of the year had concluded that this track was "extremely improbable".

But this work had been accused by some experts of appeasement vis-à-vis Beijing.
