The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) announced on Monday that, according to a new study developed in Argentina, the
Sputnik V
vaccine
provides
protection against the Manaus variant of
the coronavirus, one of the most widely circulated during this second wave of the pandemic .
The research was carried out by the Virology Institute of the National University of Córdoba and by the authorities of Córdoba.
As reported by the RDIF, this work confirms "the
neutralizing effectiveness
of the Russian two-component Sputnik V vaccine against the Brazilian strain of the coronavirus, identified for the first time in the city of Manaus, as well as a high immune response in those vaccinated with the drug. ".
In the conclusions of the study, published on the official website of the province of Córdoba, it is actually stated that "neutralization of the Manaus variant was observed in all the evaluated categories".
The report also indicates that
99.65%
of the individuals had developed IgG antibodies against the coronavirus on day 42 after receiving the second injection of the vaccine.
Meanwhile,
85.5%
had them on the 14th after receiving the first.
In any case, the researchers detailed that in some samples the antibodies showed
a lower neutralizing capacity
against the Manaus variant - compared to the original strain - in the groups of people recovered from infections with the original variant of the virus and in those who received both doses, "but they had no previous exposure to the virus."
On the other hand, they stated that "the results demonstrate
the importance of administering the second dose
of the vaccine to those who have not had previous exposure to the virus", since "the neutralizing antibody titre (AcNT) increases significantly in this group per day 42 post vaccination ".
Meanwhile, in those who had already had contact with the virus, the second dose could be "dispensed with" at least in terms of the response of humoral immunity (antibody generation).
Kirill Dmitriev, executive director (CEO) of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), highlighted that with this new study "we see that the use of this drug helps to protect the population not only against known ones,
but also against new variants of the virus, including the Brazilian one
. In addition, a strong immune response develops after receiving the first dose of the vaccine. "
Until this Monday, Argentina received 6,585,550 of the first component of this vaccine and 1,060,160 of the second.
So far it is the most widely used vaccine in the country.
Sputnik V is registered in 66 countries, with a total population of more than 3.2 billion people.
