The champion Lille certify the end of the hegemonies of football in Europe. From France to Italy, passing through Scotland, Portugal and even Spain, the pandemic season, which forced all leagues to revise their calendars by virtue of the health emergency from Covid, in fact marked the end of football domains in half of Europe which appeared undisputed, at least until 12 months ago. A change of guard at the top that cannot be accidental, since it affects three of the five main continental leagues.

Indicating new and unprecedented balances of strength, it is not known how long they last, in tournaments accustomed to long and uninterrupted monologues. This is the case of the French championship, won on the finish line by Lille, in front of Paris Saint Germain, the battleship of transalpine football, which had won the last three Ligue 1s, even seven of the last eight editions. The last triumph of Lille dates back to 2011, or ten years ago, the same long wait suffered by the Rangers, who returned to excel in Scotland (for the 55th time) after nine years of undisputed Celtic domination. If in Italy Inter have dethroned Juventus who were chasing their tenth consecutive laurel, in Portugal the former team of Cristiano Ronaldo, Sporting Lisbon, put an end to an 18-year diarchy, during which Porto collected 11 national titles, Benfica seven. No less evident are the supremacy of Barcelona and Real Madrid in the La Liga, won by the two queens of Spain 15 times (overall) in the last 16 years.

The only exception dates back to 2014 when Atletico led by Cholo Simeone had won, which was repeated this year, right on the last day. At the end of a season that - in all countries - has been a blender of fatigue and stress, compressed in just eight months, with no interruption or adequate preparation before the start. Because last year, due to the three-month interruption that all the championships had observed in the spring, it had already ended well beyond the maximum time, trespassing in the summer. And for those who had advanced in the European cups, the holidays were limited to less than two weeks. Determining an overload of psycho-physical fatigue that, probably, the teams less hungry for victories, or for the desire for redemption, have suffered more than those who have been able to focus on the goal. Putting aside personal worries, the distractions from Covid, the monotony of a season that has never granted relief. A unique and (hopefully) unrepeatable season, even in the coincidence of its surprises.
