The advance of the second wave of the pandemic has a strong impact on the health system.

A new report revealed that in

half the country

the occupation of intensive care is at

90% or higher levels

.

Coronavirus patients represent 58% of the total hospitalized in the country.

In the AMBA, there are

7 out of 10

.

In addition, it was detected that in almost

60%

of the health centers of the City of Buenos Aires and the GBA

there are no beds available

.

The survey was carried out by the Argentine Society of Intensive Care (SATI) on Friday 21. That same day

Lara Arreguiz

died

in Santa Fe, the 22-year-old girl who had covid-19 and who ended up lying on the floor due to lack of beds at the Iturraspe hospital.

The sample carried out took data from 186 intensive care units (ICUs) of public and private hospitals throughout the country, with a total of 3,598 beds.

According to the SATI survey, in 6 out of 10 AMBA health centers there are no longer beds available.

The average occupancy detected was 90%.

The worst records were found in the health centers of

Chubut, La Pampa, Mendoza and San Juan

, which "stated that they had an occupation of

more than 95%,

" the report detailed.

Meanwhile, in the City of Buenos Aires and in the provinces of Buenos Aires and Santa Fe it was higher than 90%.

Córdoba, Corrientes, La Rioja, Santiago del Estero and Tucumán "were around 90%."

Within the AMBA, 51 ICUs were surveyed, representing 1,227 beds, and an average occupancy rate of

93%

was recorded.

Covid-19 patients represent 70% of the total there, with a

use of mechanical ventilation of 83%

.

Another worrying fact is that 6 out of 10 institutions responded that they

did not have any bed available

.

The president of SATI, Rosa Reina, described the situation as "dramatic" and pointed out that there was "

an increase of almost 4%

in bed occupancy in the last week, 524 more beds in absolute number", according to official data.

"There are fewer and fewer ICUs with occupancy less than 70%, there are more and more ICUs that are between 80 and 100% occupancy, with Covid being between 58 and 60%," he said in dialogues with the Télam agency.

A new piece of information that this study provides in relation to the previous ones is that 1.4% of the patients admitted to the ICU are

people who re-entered

the hospital from their homes due to Covid-19 sequelae.

"36% of patients are on a ventilator outside of an ICU," he added.

In the last days the number of institutions that enable

"the last goodbye" has

grown

;

that is, the possibility that terminally ill patients may be fired by their loved ones.

Currently this occurs in 90% of the health centers surveyed, while in previous studies it was 70%.

As usual, SATI clarified in its statement that this study "is only a sample" and does not contemplate the total number of institutions in the country "so it is not prudent to draw conclusions above official statistics."

According to the latest report from the Ministry of Health, the occupation of intensive therapies -for all pathologies- is 73.9% at the national level and 76.2% in the AMBA.

There are currently 6,373 serious patients with covid-19 in critical beds, a figure that represents a record for the entire pandemic and that arrives 17 days of uninterrupted growth.
