A collective, which campaigns to change the law, wants to automatically establish for each child the name of the father and mother. The subject, defe

Marine has been "humiliated" several times, she says, at airports or during administrative procedures with her children.

Since then, she has never separated from her family records, the ultimate proof of her motherhood.

Tired of not bearing the name of her daughter and her son, born to two different fathers from whom she is now separated, she ended up creating a collective: Porte mon nom.

His fight ?

The automatic introduction, at the birth of the child, of the double surname, that of the father joined to that of the mother, and the simplification of the procedures to change the name, a real obstacle course at the present time.

Because despite the law of March 4, 2002 which allows parents to choose the name they want at birth for their child, traditions die hard and a large majority of babies - between 80 and 85% according to INSEE - bear only the patronymic, the name of the father, therefore.

“On a daily basis, in a blended sibling, it's hell!

reports this 37-year-old woman, also a municipal councilor (SE) in Palavas-les-Flots (Hérault).

I have to constantly prove that I am the mother and make derogatory remarks about my private life, which I am obliged to confide to strangers when registering at school or at the swimming pool, ”explains Marine Gatineau-Dupré.

Over 2,400 testimonials collected

A petition was launched on change.org which gathered, as of May 23, nearly 6,700 signatures. It has also already enabled 2,400 testimonies to be collected. The collective has also embarked on the writing of a decree to modify the law. The project, defended by the LREM deputy of Hérault Patrick Vignal, will be the subject of a meeting this Tuesday, in Paris, with the Keeper of the Seals Éric Dupond-Moretti.

"When we look around or listen to the testimonies, we realize that the surname of the child is never really chosen by the woman and this sometimes generates dramatic situations", reports Patrick Vignal .

“The automation of the double last name is a smart solution.

It would also help improve the place of women in society, ”insists the deputy, who defends the idea of a decision in the Council of Ministers or of a possible decree in the coming months.

The project already reworked in 2013

In 2013, Christiane Taubira, then Keeper of the Seals, had already tried to change the law and introduce the automation of the double surname.

In vain.

The project had been retoked by UMP deputies.

Today, the subject could therefore return to the table, at the initiative of civil society.

“For Mother's Day, it would be a great gift to give to all those separated or divorced mothers who are often helpless in the face of this situation!

»Launches Marine Gatineau-Dupré, the co-founder of the collective Porte mon nom, itself supported by the feminist collective Georgette Sand, which campaigns for the visibility of women in the public space.

Spokesperson for the Porte mon nom collective, Marine Gatineau-Dupré, a divorced mother of two children, hopes for a rapid change in the law.

DR

“When my children were born, I never thought of parting ways with dad. He went to declare our child alone and wrote his only family name against my advice on the civil status certificate, says Marine Gatineau-Dupré. The introduction of the double surname would solve all the problems. This would avoid any form of pressure between the parents and limit conflicts, ”she continues before listing all the situations where women find themselves in difficulty.

"There are divorced mothers who feel obliged to ask their ex-husbands for permission to keep the marital name in order to maintain the link with their children", or even "single mothers who have suffered violence from their ex and who, despite the separation, cannot turn the page. "There are also mothers with different names who learn that their ex is remarrying and that the mother-in-law will bear the same name as her husband's children," she still lists. And to launch: "It is time to change this law which no longer corresponds at all to current society. "
