»Princess Charming« on TVNOW: riot off

"Princess Charming", the first lesbian dating format, is starting happily free of limousines and lurid scenes. Don't worry: butts are still important.

"Princess Charming" candidates Miri, Sarina and Bine: banter by the pool

It would be refreshing if the limousines full of love loads rolled up for the next "Bachelor" season, two dozen women in prom dresses stepped out of them and handed them a few awkward souvenirs to the waiting Balzmann - but instead of just stammering rather uninteresting bureaucratic facts such as age and place of residence the "Bachelor" would first ask his candidates how strict they are with heteronormativity. And on the next best group date, he would then ask the loving group about their sex preferences, and nobody would find that funny.

It's a bit funny how almost solemnly aseptically-romantic the initiation of relationships in the straight formats "Bachelor" and "Bachelorette" is committed - and how robust it is in the gay and lesbian variations.

"Would you do it yourself in the house?" A candidate wants to know from her colleagues as she drives to the joint booth.

"On a scale from one to ten - how much do you like to lick?" Asks the "Princess Charming" Irina hose, who has just started the dating service, not as a greeting, but in the teaser preview of upcoming episodes as if to the viewers and reassure viewers who might fear that a format without hormone-driven men could end up being completely sexless, dear.

Get to know each other in outing snippets

The first lesbian dating format, which has just started on TVNow and will later also be shown on Vox, does some things better than its long-established, related formats at the beginning: As with the gay version of “Prince Charming”, the love seekers just gradually meet in hers Villa (also known from "Princess Charming"), the "Princess" will be added later, so the unnecessarily uptight Ankarr parade is no longer necessary.

Instead, you can observe the first interactions of the selected person even before the picker's arrival - and they take the form of small outing snippets (“My family thinks this is just a phase”) and brief statements (“We women tend to duck, and I think it's time that we stop doing it and show that we can be more than what some men think of us «) get to know better than the redundancy shivering in the limousine fund. Traditionalists and canon lovers can rest assured, however, that classic sentences from dating shows are not missing either: "My princess should have a nice ass, that's important to me."

"Princess" Irina is well cast, in life beyond the amour nobility she is a lawyer and on the first evening reflects her first impressions aptly but carefully. While she briefly leaves the introductory party to think about who has to go home again now, this question settles itself: The rowdy Ulle and the self-doubted Sonja clash so violently in the off that only a scream is heard on the show hear remains - instead of sensational scenes, a soberly worded text table informs that unfortunately there had been an "argument" "which has no place at Princess Charming" and therefore the opponents' participation "ended with immediate effect". That is, especially with the previous pictures of well-lit derailments elsewhere, still in mind, unusually responsible and consistent. All the more so since the end of the two subsequent Heimschick ceremonies naturally relieves the tension: From the chains to be awarded, which the »Princess« hands out instead of roses or ties, you can easily count that no one has to go any further.

In any case, it is more exciting for the following episodes how seriously »Princess Charming« means the topics that have only been touched upon at the beginning. Cast member Gea had declared in the introductory film that it was not binary - if the format were able to continue to give the classic dating format audience a relaxed understanding, that would be nice evidence of the normalization potential of trash TV.
