Important, vital and life-saving.

As early as 1775, long before a long line of medical developments that changed our lives, two scientists discovered that electricity could save lives, when they saw that electrical signals could stop and renew the heartbeat of birds.

Although many years passed before this insight was used by humanity in practice - but finally it happened in 1947, when a 14-year-old boy suffered from ventricular fibrillation (arrhythmia) in his heart, and his life was saved thanks to a surgeon named Claude Bock, who was the first doctor in history to use a defibrillator.

Today no one has any doubt that this device is important, vital and life-saving.

This is the most effective way to provide primary care to people with life-threatening conditions of arrhythmias, which lead to cardiac arrest and can most likely cause death.

Since 2014, the law in Israel also requires that such a device be in every public place - but it is our commitment to ensure that it is not only available - but also that everyone can operate it easily.

Maher Agbaria, who founded and manages "Peace Medical and Laboratory Equipment," is well aware of the ability of this device to save lives.

Maher, now 56, studied nursing in Italy in his youth and worked for 15 years as a nurse in surgery and intensive care units at Ichilov, Meir, and Assuta hospitals.

At some point he decided to devote more time to the family so he left the demanding job of nursing and set up his own company, which offers a wide range of medical and laboratory equipment and even owns a factory that manufactures its own furniture for hospitals and clinics.

Considered a unique device in the medical landscape because he knows how to do all the work himself.

He now explains why the defibrillator is considered such a unique device in the medical landscape.

"Not only is this device essential for saving lives, it does all the work itself and does not need anyone to operate it. In fact, you do not need special training to use it - all you have to do is connect it to the body of the person who needs help and he performs the diagnosis and also gives Life-saving treatment if necessary. "

"The device speaks to you in your language and explains how to operate"

Today, as mentioned, the defibrillator is legally placed in nursing homes, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, shopping centers, gyms, swimming pools, office buildings and basically any other institution that houses hundreds of people regularly.

However, it is recommended and important to incorporate it even in places where it may not be required by law - but may be useful.

The device can detect on its own if it is needed

As part of his job, Maher guides people to the proper use of the device.

He provides the training mainly to managers, medics and medical and nursing staff, although he emphasizes that one does not have to undergo training to save a life through it.

"When you turn on the device, it speaks to you in Hebrew or any other language and explains how to operate it. Even if there is doubt as to whether the device is necessary or not - it is worth using it, because it can detect on its own if needed - and turn on electricity only if required. In any other situation, he will not do anything. "

Did you locate a person unconscious and without a pulse?

According to him, at no stage can the device put the person in danger - even if the patient does not really suffer from heart rhythm disorders, but simply fainted as a result of an imbalance of blood sugar, dehydration or any other reason.

Familiarize yourself with life-saving guidelines

Although the defibrillator does the resuscitation work itself, it is important that each person also knows how to identify people who need these important emergency actions and understand how to provide proper assistance as soon as possible.

In this context, too, Maher shares with us his knowledge as a former brother and as the director of a medical equipment company that also deals quite a bit with other life-saving equipment.

"If you see a person who has lost consciousness, it is first important to dial 101 to Magen David Adom and get help and guidance over the phone. Then you should check if the person has a pulse and if he is breathing. If there is no pulse, ask a close person to locate the defibrillator. "When locating the defibrillator, simply open the lid and follow the automatic instructions. All you have to do is stick the stickers on the patient's body and allow the device to perform the diagnosis itself."
