(ANSAMed) - BEIRUT, MAY 26 - There is a general strike today in all of Lebanon, for more than a year and a half overwhelmed by the worst financial crisis of the last 30 years and with a poverty line that has now exceeded more than 50% of the population.
In the last few hours, numerous unions have confirmed their adhesion to the general strike called in recent days and which will take place in various cities of the country.
Workers cross their arms to protest against the deterioration of social and economic conditions in the shadow of a crisis that unfolded in the autumn of 2019 well before the advent of COVID but which was exacerbated by the local and global repercussions of the pandemic.
Lebanon lives in a situation of gradual increase in social and political tension, while essential goods such as electricity, gasoline, medicines, drinking water are increasingly scarce. The banking system filed for bankruptcy and the government formally announced financial default in March 2020.
The local lira, pegged for many years to the US dollar at a fictitious fixed rate, lost 90% of its value in 18 months. (ANSAMed).
