(ANSAMed) - BEIRUT, MAY 26 - Russian nuclear bombers have been deployed for the first time from Moscow in the eastern Mediterranean, at the Syrian military base of Hmeimim, near the port of Latakia.
This was reported in the last hours by Syrian and regional media, citing the Russian defense ministry, according to which three long-range bombers Tupolev Tu-22M3 landed on the Hmeimim runways. The Russian ministry says the three aircraft will participate in a military exercise in the Mediterranean before returning to Russia. Thanks to the creation of the Hmeimim military base from the end of 2015 and the expansion of the Russian military port of Tartus, also in Syria, Russia has expanded its range of action and influence throughout the Middle East and North Africa.
Russia has recruited thousands of Syrian mercenaries and transported them to the theater of war in Libya using the Hmeimim military base. (ANSAMed).
