The "Pick & Go" concept is intended to enable shopping without a checkout process.

Cologne - Rewe starts its first “Pick & Go” test market in Germany.

Behind the concept is the possibility of shopping without a checkout process.

In the supermarket, customers still have the option to pay at the checkout as usual, according to Rewe.

Most consumers are familiar with shops with self-scanning checkouts, but the “Pick & Go” concept completely dispenses with a checkout process.

From the outside, the test store still appears to be like any other Rewe supermarket. But the data protection notices and the entrance barrier inside show that something is different in this supermarket. Customers who want to shop at the checkout without an active checkout process, i.e. who opt for an autonomous check-out, “register at the barrier using a special app”. The customers should then select products as usual and pack them up. The system recognizes which articles have been selected or put on hold. After shopping, customers should be able to simply leave the store - without having to go to a checkout or have scanned the products themselves. The receipt is automatically sent to the user after the purchase. Shopping could soon become more expensive.

Rewes Pick & Go: Cameras and weight sensors take over the checkout

But how does it all work?

Rewe uses computer vision technology for this.

“Cameras on the ceilings and weight sensors on the shelves recognize products, people and interactions and can use this to calculate which customer has taken which product.

And shopping baskets are automatically calculated from this combination of the three elements.

If a product is put back on a shelf in the wrong way, the camera will also recognize it, ”explains Anika Vooes, Innovation Manager at Rewe digital.

Rewe gives the all-clear for data protection concerns.

Face recognition is not used in the concept.

In addition, no data should be stored that can directly identify people.

It is important to Rewe that customers continue to have the choice of traditional shopping.

That is why this hybrid concept was chosen.

The Pick & Go is currently being tested in the Cologne branch on Zeppelinstrasse.

The shopping trolleys from Rewe and Co. should also become more digital.
