Relieve pain without any side effects, promote blood circulation, relax muscles and stimulate the immune system: many people swear by acupuncture. It is considered an important pillar of traditional Chinese medicine *. During the treatment, the finest needles are inserted into certain areas of the body with the aim of relieving pain and other ailments.

Also because it is not a conventional medical measure, patients often have to bear acupuncture costs themselves - but not always.

The consumer advice center informs that, since 2007, statutory health insurance companies have covered the costs of acupuncture treatment for chronic back pain in the lumbar spine and knee joint if the pain has persisted for at least six months.

Many health insurance companies would also bear the costs of treatment for other diseases, it said.

Acupuncture: Costs can also be covered by supplementary health insurance

The IKK Classic says: “The prerequisite for the assumption of costs is that your chronic pain in the lumbar spine or in at least one knee joint due to osteoarthritis of the knee was diagnosed by your doctor at least six months ago. The treatment must then be carried out by a specialist ”. Techniker Krankenkasse and Barmer also pay for acupuncture sessions in these cases, provided a doctor's recommendation is available.

Patients are entitled to up to ten acupuncture sessions per case of illness, within a maximum of six weeks.

You can ask your advisor whether and to what extent your health insurance company pays or subsidizes further acupuncture treatments.

Supplementary health insurance can also include the assumption of costs

, informs the consumer advice center.

In any case, it should be agreed with the attending physician how he or she assesses the success of an acupuncture treatment.
