We live in a hot country that has sun all year round, so it is important to know as much as possible about the sunscreen and be sure to use it.

Exposure to the sun without sunscreens can cause premature skin aging and even lead to DNA changes that can even lead to cancer.

Sunscreen Day started today (yes, there is a day like this and we will celebrate it) - Just before the temperatures start to climb upwards, it is a great opportunity to learn how much the sunscreen protects you, how to choose the right one for you and how long you can keep it in the closet without spoiling?

Keren Bartov, an expert cosmetologist in all skin conditions, with the complete guide.

What does the acronym SPF mean?

SUN PROTECTION FACTOR - is actually the most common measure of sun protection products, ie how long the skin can be exposed to the sun's rays while maintaining a minimal degree of risk from burns.

For example: with 15 SPF you can stay in the sun for about half an hour and as the number of SPF increases so does the duration of exposure.

The recommendation is for daily use in SPF 30 or higher protection products, but the truth is that it is advisable to go for the safest and use only SPF 50 SPFs.

It is important to remember that SPF dissipates so it should be renewed every two hours so as not to take a risk.

Although 50 SPF gives us 4 hours of sun exposure, it is still recommended to renew every two hours.

If it is a direct exposure to the sun or staying near a water source (pool, sea or even snow on skis, which reflect the radiation and increase its intensity), should be applied at a frequency of once an hour.

Note that apply about half an hour before exposure to the sun, and it is recommended to apply a generous amount.

How to choose sunscreen?

The choice of sunscreen should be tailored to the skin type, but because it blends in with the rest of the cosmetics of our skincare routine, the most important thing to make sure is that it is as light and non-greasy as possible, so that it does not weigh down the skin and feel the skin breathes.

It is also recommended to note that the sunscreen protects from UVA and UVB rays.

In this context, it is advisable to know that there is a difference in the use of a sunscreen in a cream or spray: the cream is more durable when sweating on the body or in contact with water, while the texture of the spray is more watery and therefore lighter.

All the well-known brands in the field are good to use, and beyond that it is really a personalization of the feeling on the skin.

However, nowadays in an age where buying online or from small places, the approval of the Ministry of Health must be ensured so that we know that the SPF is exactly as written on the product.

In the water it's a different story.

By the way, note other "subtleties" such as the difference between Water resistant and Water proof WR product keeps SPF written on the package after about 40 minutes in the water, compared to the WP product that keeps SPF indicated on the package even after an hour and a half while in water .

Therefore, this preparation is intended for people who swim, stay in the water, or have a tendency to sweat.

How long can I keep sunscreen in the closet?

Most preparations have an expiration date of about 3 years, but some lose their effectiveness faster.

Therefore, be sure to read the instructions and pay attention to the instructions even after opening the preparation (usually a sign of an open tube will appear next to the number of months of use from the moment of opening).

By the way, if there is a doubt - there is no doubt: if you are in doubt about the effectiveness of the product that you have at home for a long time, it is better not to use it and buy a new one.

In order to maintain the protection product, care must be taken to maintain it in a place with an average temperature.

Do not keep it in a place with extreme temperature like a vehicle standing in the sun.

However, it is recommended to put the protection factor in the personal file, so that it is always available for renewal every hour or two.

Be careful with pigmentation.

Who should be especially careful?

Acne sufferers must take extra care when exposed to the sun as their skin is overly sensitive, and there are some acne medications that increase the skin's sensitivity to light, so to protect the skin use a sunscreen of at least SPF30 and avoid exposing the acne area to the sun.

For those with a tendency to pigmentation, it is recommended to be protected from sun exposure as much as possible. In addition to intensive use of SPF 50, the use of substances known as melanin suppressants should be combined, with the advice of a professional (doctor or beautician).

Unfortunately the protection coefficients do not provide 100% protection from the sun so a wide-brimmed hat, glasses and long clothes should be provided if possible.
