The young woman, after a trivial surgery on a limb, following completely unforeseen complications, had suffered neurological damage such as to make her substantially inert, and unable to survive without the assistance of external technological devices.
"Our request - explains D'Incà - was accompanied by a consultation drafted by the South Tyrolean neurosurgeon Leopold Saltuari, according to which at the end of a rehabilitation period of a few months Samantha could at most have swallowed by herself. But all the institutes consulted by 'Belluno health authority refused to take charge of the case ".
