"France does not believe in me": Parcoursup, a week of stress and disappointment

2021-06-04T10:56:12.985Z

Seven days after the announcement of the first results for admission to higher education, the orientation platform for post-baccalaureate courses

“For the license in economics at the Sorbonne, it is 1416th out of 5511 and there are only 750 places.

For the double license in law and eco-management at Paris II-Assas, it is 1284th for 35 places and 1900 students are registered… It's heartbreaking.

»At the end of the line, Franck and Audrey, Enzo's parents, did not give up.

A brilliant course, "18 average throughout high school", but their 18-year-old son was refused all his wishes on Parcoursup, the orientation platform for higher education courses.

It's been a week since Parcoursup communicated its first assignment results for the year 2021-2022 and for many students like Enzo, the announcement leaves a bitter taste.

"I worked for the best and finally I harvest the worst", sums up the young man.

Expatriate in East Asia for the work of the mother, her family initially thought that the quack came from there - a geographical distance which did not make Enzo a priority - but the observation is widely shared in France.

Like him, Margaux, Klea, Lukas and many high school students, yet educated in France and with correct to excellent averages, panic.

Nothing, a week later, gives them hope for a serene return to school next year.

"It's really humiliating"

Thursday, Enzo connects to Parcoursup and it's a cold shower: twelve of his wishes are refused - "all IEP (Institutes of Political Studies, Editor's note) refused, Sciences-po pending, but he is not summoned oral so we no longer believe, lists his mother.

Runner-up refused automatically… Assas remains but Enzo is 6th on the waiting list for a course which includes 25 students in all, so we don't really believe it.

The young man accuses the blow.

“It's really humiliating.

It took me a good day to tell myself

it will pass

, he confides.

One wonders what is the point of having given so much because I deprived myself of a lot of things, I worked like a dog.

After hesitating to tell his comrades about it, Enzo takes the plunge. “They were stunned,” he says. They told me

if there was one we believed in it was you

. “In his French high school abroad, many dream of an international career when Enzo sees himself returning to Paris for the rest of his studies. “I'm a bit of the tricolor flag bearer, laughs someone who dreams of a political career on a French or European scale. I believe in France, in its education, I believe in merit, in work and there I am refused everywhere ... My comrades told me

France does not deserve you

. The message she's sending me, anyway, is that she doesn't believe in me. If France does not believe in him, Enzo will leave for Germany next year.

The admission phase of Parcoursup runs until July 12 and the official authorities call for patience.

“Of course, there is a second wave of acceptances during which we allocate the remaining places, but compared to the means that I have given myself, it is difficult to get used to the idea of moving to the second or in the third plan ”, regrets Enzo.

"We would not have reacted like that if our kid did not have the level of his claims, but there… He has the congratulations of his teachers who present him as the driving force of the class, his parents lament.

We still do not understand that it is so badly classified.

"

"My four accepted wishes are backup choices"

Wait, wait, always wait… "I update Parcoursup every morning, it drives you crazy", scolds Lukas, 19, a final year student in Andernos-les-Bains (Gironde). Four wishes accepted, 17 others pending and two refused: at first glance, the young man is not too badly off. "But my four accepted wishes are backup choices," Lukas tempers. I had an average of 13.5, I expected to be accepted elsewhere. "

27th out of 800 on the waiting list for his first choice, the BUT (ex-DUT) technical marketing ("Tech of co", Editor's note) of Bordeaux, Lukas has for a week taken the fold of a new routine.

“I refresh the page every morning,” he explains.

This morning, I gained 4 places but until then I scratched 10 places every day: the more we advance, the more it stagnates.

The young man, whose Twitter account is usually dormant, has been using it for a week to try to reassure himself with companions in misfortune.

I have chances?

In the 15th arrondissement of Paris, Klea, who is aiming for the first year of a theatrical studies license from Paris III-Sorbonne Nouvelle, uses music to relieve his stress… and herbal tea to try to calm his nights.

“I wake up suddenly around 4 am and the first thing I do is go see Parcoursup,” she says, with an unpleasant feeling of being on the sidelines.

“I read here and there that 7 out of 10 people have already had a proposal for admission and me, it works for me.

Because in the space of a week, I was 400th and I ate more than half of the places, but this night I see that only 20 places have become available since yesterday, worries the Parisian.

At the beginning, the places were free in packs of 100 and there it slows down.

That was the trigger for my stress.

"

Anxiety that affects all ages

Klea is all the more impatient now that she is 23 years old and that the license she is aiming for corresponds to a new reorientation, after a training started last September which ultimately does not meet her expectations.

Car Parcoursup is also aimed at people wishing to resume university training or to reorient themselves.

This is the case of Marie, 37, who wishes to convert to psychology.

"I find myself caught in the whirlwind of Parcoursup on a waiting list and without an alternative, tossed around in a system where you can only speak to a computer, without knowing whether or not places are available", anguish she does.

If the functioning of Parcoursup has often been singled out since its launch in 2018, many disappointed and lucid people wonder if the problem does not go beyond the platform. "As long as there are not enough places in the superior, there will be victims", summarizes Klea. While waiting for adjustments, everyone is trying to keep hope. “I am a serious student, I have between 15.5 and 16 on average and I am on a waiting list everywhere… But I will get through it, smiles Margaux, schooled in Beauvais (Oise). My parents believe in me, we continue to believe in it, but we could do without such an expectation. "
