Mid-day fatigue is a very real thing.

You start your day full of motivation, armed with a cup of coffee and an ambitious daily to-do list.

In the morning you tick things off with record efficiency, the items on the to-do list are erased at an impressive rate but then suddenly around noon, usually between two and three o'clock, suddenly your battery weakens a bit and your efficiency dips.

Mid-day fatigue is a very real and noticeable thing.

There are even experts, like Russell Foster who heads the field of circadian neuroscience (the circadian clock is our body's internal clock) at Oxford University, who claim that trying to work during this energy drop is almost like trying to work after downloading a few whiskey chasers (but do not try It in the office).

Foster's field of study focuses on how daytime affects our functioning, and when it comes to efficiency and performance, not every hour is a good time.

The difference in your performance during peak hours is like the difference between sobriety and drunkenness. Illustration of burnout at work (Photo: ShutterStock)

The difference in a person's performance quality during his peak hours and between his performance during the low hours of his day can be as significant as the legal rental threshold.

Usually, it takes 2-4 alcoholic beverages per hour to bring the blood alcohol concentration to 0.08 percent - a continuum from which a person is considered too drunk to drive a vehicle.

During the low hours of your day - the ones where you feel that you have suddenly been hit by mental fatigue - you are actually close to the same level of (dysfunction).

During the peak hours of your efficiency, the whole body enlists your help - hormone levels and blood pressure work in your favor, rising and falling at perfect timings according to the rhythm of your circadian clock ticking in a variety of patterns.

Most people have an increase in the level of the stress hormone cortisol in the morning, and a gradual decrease in it as the day progresses.

Blood pressure usually peaks in the early afternoon and drops in the afternoon and evening.

Get out.

The tasks that require high attention and concentration are recommended to be done during hours when both cortisol and blood pressure reach their high levels.

As these indices begin to decline during the day, you are likely to begin to feel a decrease in your alertness as well.

When you add to this the fluctuations in blood sugar levels that occur after eating lunch, there is a high probability that in the early afternoon you will feel tired and even a little fuzzy.

The step that will charge your batteries in the middle of the day

This energy drop that happens to a lot of people a little after their lunch does not have to ruin their productivity for the rest of the day. If you take a real break to rest between 14: 00-15: 00 you can still save what is left of your work day.

But when we say "pause" we mean a real pause - turn off the computer, get up from the chair and move - better out. In fact, if you can also disconnect from your phone for an hour, it will be even more effective - with no technology at all. Physical activity and a little exposure to sunlight can help recharge your energy batteries and the break from work will make you return to it with a feeling of renewed freshness.

But if you can not take such a break, and you must try to ward off afternoon fatigue, you can also try something else: change the kind of work you do during those hours.

Try devoting those hours to brainstorming or work tasks that require more creative thinking.

Precisely because these are hours of burnout and fatigue people tend to be less critical of themselves and their ideas, and for tasks of this kind these are good conditions.
