TikTok beats Facebook.
It is the most downloaded non-gaming app in the world in May on both the Google Play Store and the Apple Store.
This was revealed by SensorTower in its usual monthly ranking, which highlights how the Chinese social network has also gained the first position in the Android segment, bypassing Facebook, at the top in April and March.
The ByteDance-owned app reached 80 million new installations in the month just ended: the Brazilians are the ones who downloaded the most (16%), followed by the Chinese (12%) where the name of the software is however Douyin .
According to analysts, TikTok installations increased 35% in May compared to the previous month. However, app downloads fell 29% year-over-year, falling short of last May's record of 112 million downloads. In June 2020, TikTok was banned in India, its main overseas market. TikTok also faced political backlash in the United States in the summer, when then-President Donald Trump threatened to ban the app unless ByteDance divested the American businesses, with Oracle and Walmart in the forefront to buy them.
The current Biden administration has suspended legal action against TikTok, although the US's particularly cautious policy towards Chinese apps has not ended.
