According to the authorities, civil protection forces and the police are currently deployed to rescue the miners.
The state of Coahuila, on the border with the USA, is Mexico's most important coal producer.
The safety conditions in the mines in Mexico are often miserable, which is why accidents occur again and again.
In the worst mining accident in the region to date, 65 miners died in an explosion in 2006.
